Transformer Maintenance

Regular maintenance of transformers and transformer stations is crucial to ensure stable and efficient operation. With decades of experience, Lanzo provides comprehensive transformer maintenance services, guaranteeing the long lifespan of equipment and the prevention of malfunctions.

Why is transformer maintenance important?

Transformers are subject to continuous load, which over time can lead to malfunctions, reduced performance, or even operational failures. Regular maintenance of transformers and transformer stations helps prevent more serious issues, thus avoiding operational failures and significant repair costs.

Furthermore, the efficiency of maintained transformers can be sustained for a long time, achieving significant energy savings by reducing losses.

Transformer maintenance process

The first step in transformer maintenance is always a visual inspection and technical examination performed by a Lanzo expert. Following the inspection, a measurement report is prepared for the client, in which we evaluate the measurement results.

Technical examination of transformers:

  1. 1. Measurement of insulation resistances
  2. 2. Measurement of resistances of low and high voltage coils in all taps, as well as measurement of the transmission ratio between coils
  3. 3. After the inspection, the transformer maintenance process differs for oil-insulated and resin-insulated transformers.

Elements of oil-insulated transformer maintenance

1. Cleaning of insulating bodies, disconnection of primary and secondary connections, polishing of contact surfaces, replacement of contact washers and screws if necessary, torque tightening.

2. Cleaning of transformer body and radiators.

3. Checking oil level, oil gauge or oil level indicator, refilling oil up to a maximum of 20 litres if necessary.

4. Oil sampling for laboratory oil analysis.

5. Checking for leaks at bushings, cover, Buchholz relay, conservator connections, and radiator elements.

6. Checking tap changer.

7. Checking protections (temperature pre-warning, tripping, Buchholz pre-warning – tripping).

8. Fault gas analysis.

9. Checking earthing connections, repairing if necessary.

Elements of resin-insulated (dry) transformer maintenance

1. Cleaning of the casing and core, disconnection of primary and secondary connections, polishing of contact surfaces, scanning, replacement of contact washers and screws if necessary, torque tightening.

2. Checking corrosion protection, repairing if necessary.

3. Checking coil fastenings, retightening screws if necessary.

4. Checking transformer mounting, vibration dampers, and yoke connectors.

5. Checking protections (temperature pre-warning – tripping).

6. Cleaning ventilation system in case of fan cooling, checking/measuring PTC or PT elements, repairing if necessary.

7. Checking earthing connections, repairing if necessary.

Maintenance of transformer stations

In addition to maintaining transformers, we must not forget about the stations themselves. Be it a sheet metal, concrete-cased, or other type of transformer station, whether old or new, periodic maintenance is essential for each.

The preliminary step in maintaining transformer stations is also the visual inspection and technical examination of the station.

Elements of transformer station maintenance:

1. Cleaning and dust removal of transformer station rooms. Checking air passages, cleaning any chemical contaminants.

2. Assessing the condition of electrical equipment components (ensuring all equipment is free from physical damage) and checking if the connections meet technical specifications.

3. Checking parts of medium voltage equipment that do not involve breaking seals, retightening connections with a torque wrench.

4. Checking lubrication of switchgear, lubricating as necessary.

5. Checking low voltage side connections, retightening connections with a torque wrench.

6. Inspecting hot spots visually, performing necessary measurements.

Advantages of transformer and station maintenance

Longer lifespan: Regular inspections and maintenance work can prevent serious malfunctions, thus extending the lifespan of the transformer.

Uninterrupted operation: Maintenance helps identify potential faults and implement preventive measures, reducing the likelihood of unexpected shutdowns and operational failures.

Energy efficiency: Well-maintained transformers lose less energy during operation, providing cost savings.

Safety: Regular maintenance increases safety by minimising the risk of faults and accidents in electrical systems.
